Get Free Traffic from Search Engines
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a term used generally to describe the process of promoting your website up the rankings of a search engine for a chosen keyword.
Assuming that you’ve tested your chosen keyword (I suggest you use a quick PPC campaign to do this) and found it works well at converting visitors into customers on your website, then you are ready to start promoting your website for that keyword.
To be more accurate, I actually mean you’ll be ready to promote a web PAGE for the chosen keyword, search engines index and rank web pages rather than web sites.
Your first priority is to make sure you have a web page in your site devoted entirely to promoting your chosen keyword. You’ll need more dedicated SEO pages as you add more keywords to your campaign.
5 Key Web Page Factors you Must Address for Effective SEO
1. The TITLE tag. It’s important that the title of your page includes your keyword. The title of the page also forms the links you see in search engine results pages, so the title must also attract the attention of your potential visitors.
2. The META Description tag. Make sure that this tag is populated with a concise and interesting summary of your page and includes your keyword. This description usually forms the snippet of content displayed in search engine results pages, it’s important that the words you use encourage your potential visitor to click on your site!
3. The HEADING tag. Include a heading tag (H1) on your dedicated SEO page and make sure the heading includes your keyword.
4. The BODY text. Write interesting content that captivates your visitor and makes them WANT to read what you have to say. Remember that they want to know what’s in it for them, they’re not interested in your company history or anything else about your company for that matter. If they searched for “yellow teddy bears” and clicked through to your website, be sure you deliver interesting content about “yellow teddy bears” to keep them reading. Remember to use your keyword in the body text, use it where it fits naturally and sounds right, don’t force unnecessary keywords in where they don’t fit, your reader won’t like it and the search engines won’t either!
5. Outgoing LINK text. It can be beneficial to include a link to elsewhere in your site or to another site with your keyword in the link text.
Each of these 5 factors help the search engine ‘understand’ that your web page is about the subject of your keyword.
Ok. You’ve done the basics, now it’s time to get on with the hard work.
This is how you do it....
Increase the Exposure of Your Web Page
When search engines see other websites linking to your dedicated page using your keyword as link text they understand two things:
- It reinforces the idea of what subject your web page is about.
- If a website with authority and clout links to your web page the search engine attaches some of that importance to your web page too.
5 Great Linking Strategies
1. Links from other WEBSITES. If you can get links from other important websites in your subject field, either by asking the webmaster for a link or producing content that they WANT to link to, these links will be invaluable to your SEO campaign, they will add authority to your web page.
2. Links from online ARTICLES. The internet has a proliferation of article sites. You can publish and article on one or many of these sites and have them all link back to your dedicated SEO web page. Be sure to use your keyword in the link text as always!
3. Links from online NEWS. Do you have news to tell? Write it up in a press release and submit it to two or three of the many press release sites on the internet. You may need to pay some of these sites to allow you to include links back to your dedicated web page. The great thing about a press release is that it can get syndicated to many other press release and news sites, duplicating your links over and over with no further effort from you.
4. Links from SOCIAL MEDIA sites. You can go really wild with these, there are just so many things you can do! Facebook, Squidoo, Wetpaint, Digg and Delicious are just a tiny fraction of all the social media sites in the internet. All of them provide some method of creating useful links back to your dedicated SEO web page. More links, more authority, more power, better rankings!
5. Links from BLOGS and FORUMS. Whatever your subject matter, someone, somewhere is writing about it on a blog or in a forum. You can add comments to other people’s blogs and include links back to your web page. You can join a forum and get involved in conversations and link back to your web page. Be sure that you make relevant comments and conversation though, cross the line into valueless spamming and no-one will want to be your friend... You need to give as well as take, relevant, interesting comments and conversation will be welcomed by bloggers and forums and they’ll be happy to link to your web page too!
All of these strategies take time, effort and knowledge, but there is an easier way, like this...
